What Lego should have done..

Let’s make this simple idea by Maritsa Patrinos a reality. 

Maritsa’s comic (an extract is shown above, see and read more) proposes that little is necessary to offer equal opportunities to boys, girls and children who hate to be categorized.

My project idea, in German (continue below if you prefer English):

Ich hätte Lust dazu, das Umbauen eines Lego Technik Produktes (o.ä.),
welche vorherrschende Rollenbilder reproduziert, zu einem, welches sie
dekonstruiert, etwas zu professionalisieren. Letztes Mal habe ich
eigentlich nur den Hubschrauberpiloten durch eine Pilotin ersetzt. Dafür
musste aber auch die Anleitung und der Karton angepasst werden, damit
das Kind nicht beim Zusammenbau feststellt, dass – laut Hersteller – ja
eigentlich ein Mann ins Cockpit muss..
Was ich letztes Mal mit Finelinern gemalt habe (roter Lippenstift und
Augenbrauen der abgebildeten Figur) könnte man mit geeigneter Software
und Drucktechnik nicht nur schöner machen, sondern auch vervielfältigen.
Interessierte Eltern könnten ihren Legokasten einschicken und bekommen
dann eine “modernisierte” Version zurück.

In short, I think a girl would be interested in technical LEGO as much as boys are, if they could identify as much with it, as boys can, nowadays. I once replaced the helicopter pilot (man) with a female figure and gave the box to my niece. While it was a success, it was tedious to modify the whole package and instructions.

Now I want to do that again and more professionally (with your help), then we can offer an “improve-my-toy” service to interested parents (non-profit) and spread the word. Just documenting it here would already be a nice start. Let’s make our children happy, free and successful in pursuing their own visions 🙂
